How to Take Charge of Your Inspection Home Education

Home education

Are you set up for home education success? Or are you planning to wing it when you start your ICA School home inspection course? Your approach to online study can make or break your new career. Get it right, and you’ll be a success story, not a cautionary tale.

Here’s how to get the most out of your education investment.

Use the Right Technology

You don’t need to buy a new computer to take the ICA School home inspection course. But you do need reliable technology. Trust us, it will save you mountains of headaches.

The University of Central Florida put together a handy list of system requirements. As long as your technology meets these minimum standards, you’ll do fine.

  • Desktop or laptop computer with Windows 7 or newer, or Mac OS X or newer
  • Reliable Internet access
  • Word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Mac Pages
  • PDF reader (Adobe)
  • Flash player (Adobe)
  • Media player such as RealPlayer or Windows Media Player
  • Reliable web browser such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Safari or Firefox
  • Javascript

You can also access course materials using an iPhone, Android or similar mobile device.

Set up a Study Space

You’ve probably seen TV commercials where students study on the bus, during lunch time at work and over breakfast at home. The portability of ICA School’s training makes those viable options, but you’ll still want a dedicated study space for quiet work.

According to eLearners, a separate study space helps you focus. Here’s what they recommend.

  • A dedicated room if possible, or part of a less-trafficked room if not
  • Someplace quiet
  • Comfortable surroundings
  • Appropriate furniture (comfy chair, desk and places to store printed materials)
  • Minimal distractions
  • Headphones to help cancel noise that you can’t avoid

Avoid Common Pitfalls

Online study has a notoriously high rate of drop-outs, but you are in control of your story. In 2011, the Higher Learning Commission determined that student-related factors are the biggest reason so many people don’t do well with online courses or don’t complete them at all.

According to the study, 38% percent weren’t ready for any type of higher learning. Twelve percent didn’t put forth the necessary effort. Twelve percent weren’t motivated, and 6 percent had other conflicting issues. These reasons are why it’s so important to set yourself up for success before you begin. Take your home inspection training course as seriously as you would any brick-and-mortar college course and chances are, you’ll soar.

Ask for Help When You Need It

If there’s one consistent issue with online study, it’s the feeling of isolation. Some students like it that way. But every student needs help once in a while, even if it’s just to clarify a bit of information.

ICA School offers direct communication with a professional instructor. Don’t be afraid to use that lifeline. If you have technical issues, need more information about a topic or just want to know you’re on the right track, reach out. Our instructors won’t leave you stranded.

Online study offers tremendous freedom, which is why it works for so many adult learners. But with freedom might also come a lax approach. It’s convenient, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

At ICA School, we provide all of the materials, resources, and access to instructors that you need to learn about the home inspection industry. But success also depends on you.
